Grade 1 Commercial Door Closers

Grade 1 is the top tier for commercial door closers. Here is what the rating proves, and how fire and accessibility rules fit in.

Updated November 2026 · By The Nut House, Borger, TX

The ANSI/BHMA A156.4 standard sorts door closers into three grades according to how they perform in testing. Grade 1 is the most demanding, with a minimum of 1.5 million test cycles against 1 million for Grade 2 and 500,000 for Grade 3. For a busy building, that is the clearest quality signal you can get, because it is measured rather than claimed.

How to read a closer's ratings

  • ANSI/BHMA grade: overall performance and durability in standardized testing.
  • Cycle count: how many open and close cycles it was tested to. Some products go past the Grade 1 minimum.
  • UL listing: approval for use on fire-rated doors, usually with a duration such as 3 hours.
  • ADA: not a rating of the closer itself. It describes how the door must behave once installed and adjusted.

Who should insist on Grade 1?

Schools, hospitals, restaurants, government buildings and retail entrances. Any door opening hundreds of times a day benefits from it. If a project specification names Grade 1, then nothing lower is acceptable. In other buildings, read our Grade 1 vs Grade 2 comparison before you spend the extra money.

Frequently asked questions

What does Grade 1 mean on a door closer?
It means the closer meets the highest of the three performance grades in the ANSI/BHMA A156.4 standard, including a minimum of 1.5 million test cycles.
Is Grade 1 required by code?
Not automatically. Building codes do not always name a grade, but architects, schools and government projects often specify Grade 1. Check your project documents or with your local building official.
