Quick answer: most surface-mounted closers are not rated for a 600 lb door. First confirm the real weight. If the door is under 440 lbs, a rated closer may work. If it really is 600 lbs, talk to a door hardware specialist about specialist closers or powered operators.

We would rather tell you this upfront than sell you the wrong thing. The closers we recommend in this guide, the DRIWON DN-9500 and DN-8220, are rated for doors up to 440 lbs. A true 600 lb door is outside that rating, and we do not recommend overloading any closer on a door that heavy.

Step 1: confirm the real weight

Many doors described as "600 lbs" actually weigh less. Weight is often guessed. To check it:

  • Ask the door supplier or look for a data sheet.
  • Estimate from area and material. A 4' × 8' solid iron door at 15 lbs per sq ft is 480 lbs.
  • Use our weight estimates and be conservative.

Step 2: choose your approach

Options by actual door weight
Door weightApproach
Up to 440 lbsA rated heavy duty closer, such as the options for 400 lb doors
440 to 600 lbsA closer specifically rated for the weight, or a pivot-based system. Get specialist advice.
Over 600 lbsPowered door operators or custom-engineered hardware

Why overloading a closer is a bad idea

  • The door may close too fast and injure someone.
  • Internal parts and seals may fail far sooner.
  • The arm and mounting screws take loads they were not designed for.
  • Warranties generally do not cover use above the rated weight.

Gates are a different problem

If this is a heavy outdoor gate rather than a door, a building-style closer is often the wrong tool. Gates are usually better served by a dedicated gate closer or a powered opener.

What to do next

Call us at (806) 275-9274 with the door's size, material and hinges, and we will help you think it through. For very wide doors, check how much spring power you will need in the size chart.

Doors that are often over-estimated

Hardware questions about "600 lb doors" often involve a door that is much lighter. Solid core wood doors feel heavy, but a typical one is 100 to 150 lbs. Steel doors feel heavier than they are because of their hinges and stiffness. If a door is hard to move, it may have friction from worn hinges rather than real weight. Fix that first, and the closer's job becomes much easier.

Standard hollow metal, 3' × 7'100 to 150 lbs

Questions to ask a specialist

  • What is the certified weight and width rating of this closer?
  • Which arm or mounting was used to get that rating?
  • What hinges or pivots does the door need?
  • What is the opening force at that setting? Can users operate it?
  • What happens if the closer fails? Is there a safety concern for people nearby?
  • Does this door have to meet fire or accessibility rules?

Pivots and powered operators

Very heavy doors often hang on a center or offset pivot rather than on hinges, because a pivot carries the weight on the floor instead of the frame. With a floor-mounted pivot closer, the mechanism sits below the door. For heavy public doors, a powered operator opens and closes the door with a motor, and a button or sensor makes it easy to use. Both options cost more and need professional installation, but they are made for this job.

Why we are telling you this

You will see closers online promising to handle anything. We would rather you get a door that closes safely. Check the published rating, and if a listing does not give one, assume that it has not been tested at that weight. If you do come out below 440 lbs after you check, the 400 lb door guide is your next step.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a door closer for a 600 lb door?
Some specialist products exist, but most standard surface closers are rated well below that. Check the manufacturer's published rating, and ask a door hardware specialist for this kind of job.
Can I use two door closers on a very heavy door?
It is sometimes done, but closers are not designed to share a load, and the setup can behave unpredictably. Get professional advice first.
What is the maximum door weight for the DN-9500?
DRIWON lists the DN-9500 for doors up to 440 lbs.
